ESG Spotlight: Momentum Transport Consultancy

ESG Spotlight: Momentum Transport Consultancy

Momentum is an integrated transport consultancy committed to creating sustainable, people-focused mobility solutions. With a strong belief in the power of transport to shape healthier, more inclusive places, Momentum collaborates with architects, planners, developers, local authorities, and property organisations to deliver forward-looking strategies for the cities of tomorrow. Recognising that traditional approaches to transport planning fall short in the face of the climate crisis, Momentum is working to drive change across the sector. We spoke with David Hart, Managing Director, about how the company is leading this shift — from measuring and reducing its environmental impact, and fostering an equitable workplace, to supporting meaningful initiatives in the community and ensuring transparency across its operations.

ESGmark®: What sparked Momentum to engage more closely with the ESG agenda?

The environment has always been a core part of everything that we do - from our project work where we help our clients to deliver more environmentally responsible outcomes, to the way we run the Momentum business. The S and G elements have also been an evolving journey for us, and we've worked hard to meet and where we can, exceed, our responsibilities in all three areas. With ESG being so important for both us and our clients, it felt like the essential next step to evaluate the position of our business and go for certification so that we could focus on how we could build on what we are doing every day.

ESGmark®: Tell us about ESG initiatives at Momentum that you are proud of.

E: We have just successfully completed our annual EMS audit which demonstrates continuous improvement and recognises the work we do (we are proud to hold ISO 14001:2015 certification for our Environmental Management System). Transport is responsible for 27% of carbon emissions in the UK, but our industry standards don’t require us to evaluate carbon impact from a transport perspective - yet. In all of our work we can see that other consultants are required to report on the carbon story and we envisage this will become a necessary requirement for our discipline in years to come. So, we have developed our own annual sustainability impact assessment which highlights the environmental benefits achieved from each project that the company has worked on, that achieved planning consent during the previous year. The assessment captures Momentum’s contribution to the sustainability of the scheme, looking at potential transport carbon emissions savings, infrastructure and public realm provision and delivery consolidation strategies. In 2024 7,937,039 potential net kilograms of CO2e were saved yearly from transport modal shift and deliveries consolidation. Looking at our own footprint, we joined the Camden and Brent Business Climate Challenge in April 2024 and our electricity usage since January 2025 is down by 15.6% compared to the previous year.

S: Every year, our team votes for a charity to support - through fundraising and volunteering and support opportunities. Over the past two years we have been proud to support Little Village, a charity supporting families with young children across London. From June 2025 our nominated charity is Young Roots, an organisation supporting young refugees and asylum seekers to realise their potential through one-to-one support, youth activities and access to vital services. We’re proud supporters of the Camden Foodbank; signatories of the Camden STEAM Pledge, which provides inclusive support to local young people with career-related advice and opportunities; and we send our decommissioned laptops to ‘Bridge the Gap’ –  a charity which aims to combat digital and educational inequality.

G: We work hard to uphold strong governance practice through transparent decision making, robust data protection policies and clear accountability frameworks. We actively promote ethical business practices and ensure compliance with industry regulations and sustainability standards.

ESGmark®: To date what has been the biggest challenge to improving Momentum’s ESG performance and how have you overcome it?

Because of our strong background in sustainability, perhaps one of our bigger challenges has been to balance our support and policies across the three areas of ESG. That said, at our last assessment by ESGmark® we scored highly in the social area, which reflects our values and  culture.

We continue to work hard to improve career opportunities for under-represented groups; we employ people from a wide range of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and women make up 40% of our team but we remain conscious of the fact that, as a whole, women remain underrepresented in the transport sector, accounting for only 26% of workers.

ESGmark®: What’s next for Momentum on your ESG journey?

Our board and senior management team are fully invested in the journey of continuous ESG improvement. We are one year into our ESGmark® certification and, with recertification every three years, we're passionate about improving our credentials to demonstrate to our employees and clients how committed we are as an organisation.  For example, we're currently investigating undertaking a bespoke carbon footprint analysis for the business, alongside continuing the initiatives that are already embedded in the company.
